“The Final Truth” & Critical Apparatus

The Final Truth

Original Prose

“The Final Truth” is one half of my submission for my English Seminar. Initially written as a speculative adventure piece with a shocking twist, it underwent two redrafts before becoming the version featured here. This piece is the epitome of what my writing strives to be: a fantastical engagement of the mind with its borders and a space for outcasts to celebrate their otherness.

Critical Apparatus

Nonfiction and Commentary

The second half of my submission for English Seminar, this critical apparatus is a raw and precise dissection of “The Final Truth” and myself as its writer. This explores how I stepped into writing, my influences, and choices in writing “The Final Truth.” It speaks for itself, but my advisor also provided the following feedback for it:

“Nathan, I am afraid that you might have a career as a memoirist. Or at minimum, a creative non-fictionist. Even at this stage of your development as a writer, it is astoundingly clear that your authorial voice rings the truest, most genuine, most bracing, and most blisteringly acidic (which is a good thing, truly) when it is trained on your life and experiences. To whichever extent you continue to expand your writing talents, I hope that creative nonfiction will be a predominant component of it. I admit that the “creative non” genre requires a degree of radical openness, which comes with the risks of vulnerability. With that said, I will double-down on my assertion that your voice makes for valid, compelling reading, particularly when it is unleashed on observations of the world around you.”
